Facebook phone numbers get hacked ! In what is viewed by Cybersecurity experts as the biggest security lapse by Facebook since the 2016 Cambridge Analytica scandal, millions of Facebook users’ phone numbers were found online in an insecure platform.
More than 419 million users of Facebook have their contacts and other vital personal information exposed online.
The information revealed does not just include the phone numbers but also the gender and the country of origin of the Facebook users.
Are the phone numbers real?
According to TechCrunch, the phone numbers of the Facebook users available online match the database on Facebook.
It is, therefore, a serious security concern to the millions of Facebook users whose numbers may be found online.
What is the risk ?
This incident has put millions of Facebook users as potential victims of attempted SIM-swapping attacks and spam calls. If an online hacker has a user’s number, it is easy to reset the password of online accounts associated with the phone number.
What heightens the risk is that anyone can access the phone numbers online as the server hosting these numbers is not secure. Anyone can retrieve data without a password in this server.
However, Facebook has disputed the claim that more than 419 million users of Facebook are at risk of their phone numbers being exposed online.
According to Facebook’s spokesperson, the data set acquired by the hackers is old and must have been scrapped before Facebook introduced changes that do not allow users to search for friends using their phone numbers.
However, Facebook later claimed that the online server could have about 220 million phone numbers of its users.
This latest incident has revealed the risk of storing personal information online as it could be hacked and used against you.
